Chapter 2-2 Linear Equations
(Glencoe Algebra II textbook)
"Today
is unique! It has never occurred before and it will never be repeated. At
midnight it will end, quietly, suddenly, totally. Forever. But the hours between
now and then are opportunities with eternal possibilities." (from

| What is a Linear Equation? | |
| Examples:
4x-3y=8
y=4 |
Not Linear Equations: 3a2+4b3=27 x+xy=7
|
Write this equation in standard form:
3y=12+6x
3y(/3)=12(/3)+6x(/3)
y=4+2x
y=4=2x
2x-y=4

Solve this problem:
Cordelia and Ophelia are best friends. They are planning on driving to Arizona, and then Ophelia is going to California. They have $200 to spend on bus tickets. If they buy 2 tickets to Arizona and one ticket to California, how much will they have to spend on tickets? Write and Solve an equation.
2x+y=200
substitute 0 for y
2x+(0)=200
divide by 2
x=100
Plug the number back in.
2(100)+y=200
200+y=200
Move 200 from the other side.
y=0
Ophelia will be stuck in Arizona for the rest of her life because she cannot afford a bus ticket to California.
