| Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt are assigned to a homicide case that they soon realise isn't all it seems. It soon becomes apparent that there is a link between the murders that keep happening, and that is that the killer is trying to demonstate the seven deadly sins for the two detective's viewing pleasure and when the motive for these crimes has been established it is down to Somerset and Mills to catch the perpetrator of these heinous crimes. David Fincher gives us another visually impressive film as he later did again with Fight Club, creating a very dark and oppresive atmosphere in which the action is played out which suits the story perfectly. He's only made four films to date (march 2001) but if he sustains the quality that he has shown in Seven and Fight Club he could be one of the best directors of recent years (maybe he already is). Although Kevin Spacey had a relatively small part in the film screentime-wise I thought that he was by far the best actor in the film. The John Doe that he presented was the soft spoken psycho killer type which brought back memories of John Malkovich from In The Line of Fire who would be the only other person that I could imagine doing justice to such a role. He showed us what a superb actor he is, and although I've still not seen it (I hope to see it next week sometime) I would imagine that he was even better than superb in American Beauty and deserved his Oscar because quite frankly he rules. Brad Pitt was pretty good but he was nowhere near as good as when he's Tyler Durden in Fight Club mainly because the story in Seven takes precedence over the characters. It's gory and shocking in places but in this case it only adds to the quality of a top film. The new 2 disc DVD edition contains some of the best extras around so I highly recommend it. It was the same price as a regular DVD as well surprisingly.
