Ok, this is as fresh as they come because I only got back from the pictures about an hour ago and my initial reaction to the film is that it was very funny and gets a BBM recommendation and a "go and see it because it's good." Ben Stiller plays Greg Focker who it later transpires is really called Gaylord and he is going to ask he girlfriend to marry him but before he gets chance to do so he has to go to her parents house to meet them. De Niro is an ex CIA agent who has a history of not liking any of his daughters boyfriends and so naturally she is a little apprehensive about bringing Greg over to see them but thankfully all seems to go well at the start. Gradually however De Niro begins to dislike Greg and keeps a close eye on him for the couple of days he is staying with them. Greg's cause isn't helped by the fact that everything he does seems to reinforce De Niro's feelings of mistrust towards him and this is how it continues for the rest of the movie with Greg digging himself a bigger and bigger hole which is very amuzing for us to witness until in the end De Niro sees the error of his ways and allows Pam and Greg whose real name has now been discovered to get married. I thought that it was an excellent film which is a relief beause I have been looking forward to watching it for ages. It starts off slowly at first laughs wise but when it gets going every scene is great and in the end as you can see Greg's mistakes coming before he has even made them you start to feel genuinely sorry for him because he is only trying to get Jack to like him because he loves his daughter. All the lead characters are good and although De Niro was probably better in Analyze This mainly due to the fact that the script gave more room to manouver but he still gives an excellent comic performance and he and Ben Stiller are good together. Meet The Parents is a funny film with some hilarious parts and although it could be accused of lacking in some areas where other similar films get it right and, that maybe if De Niro and Stiller were replaced by unknowns then it wouldn't have been the big hit that it was I still thought it was an entertaining film. |
