My scoring system is a bit messed up at the moment because after I did the Jaws review I went through the films that I think rule trying to see if I would give any of them 10/10 and I came to the conclusion that I wouldn't. This was the old Paul Dubbya Bush reviewing, very much old skool. Now however the new regieme is here with a more liberal and humanitarian attitude towards reviewing. I should make it crystal clear though, that the unbelievable speed and ruthlessness of the revolution should not be blamed for the high marks that the Matrix was given by the four rebel leaders stationed at Bates HQ between the hours of 15:21 and 17:47 on Thursday December 14th 2000 because this is one helluva film. In fact, the best words to describe The Matrix to a quizzical bystander with would be : 1. sweet, 2. smart, 3. top. I would also recommend adding more emphasis by using the prefix 'fuckin' because it's that damn good and if you don't agree then prove me wrong. The plot : The main theme running through the film is that the world that we live in isn't real it is just a place that has been created to control us all (The Matrix). Reality is set far into the future about the year 2100 a place where the machines have taken control and grow humans to power themselves from the energy that we give off. Keannu Reeves plays Thomas Armstrong who is pretty much a regular guy who spends a lot of time on the internet where he goes by the name of Neo. He is contacted by a group of people from the real world because they believe he is "the one," not former WWF intercontinental champion 'the one' Billy Gunn but the person who can save the world from the Agents. And so the film concentrates on him being found, realising the truth and then attempting to do something about it. Don't let the story line put you off seeing the film because you would be missing out big time if you did and it isn't a complicated plot or anything. It was the special effects and the kung fu that did it for me though and you wouldn't call Keannu Reeves a shit actor to his face anymore because he'd beat the crap out of you. The script and the acting were excellent but you will marvel at the effects and thinking about it the whole look of the film is absolutely brilliant from the all black outfits and leather trench-coats to halting bullets and then plucking them out of the air. The DVD has some sweet extras about the making of The Matrix and nine short documentaries about the effects but I haven't seen them yet. And just when you thought it couldn't get any better the film played out with Rage Against The Machine which I'm sure we can all agree is a vote winner every time.
