Plot Outline: Stallone plays an expert mountain climber who retired after an accident involving his friend ended up in her falling thousands of feet to her death. Eight months later a mid-air heist goes terribly wrong and the suitcases that contain the money end up falling from the plane to the Rocky Mountains below. The baddies crash land and begin searching for the lost loot and Stallone and the good guys try to stop them from doing so.
Cliffhanger is basically a good action movie with everything that you would expect from such a film, ie. a far fetched plot, loads of impressive action sequences and a highly paid superstar actor doing the same dirt films that he has always done (apart from Stop or my mom will shoot - that film's a classic)
As I have said the action is great especially against the snowy backdrop and the general largeness of the Rocky's but the dialogue completey sucks. It was no surprise that there were rarely five sentences strung together, but then again I don't think that Sly's deformed mouth allow this without causing him some sort of  mouth ache.
However, it turns out that Cliffhanger is better than your average action movie, not more than your average action movie, just slightly better and is probably one of Stallone's best movies of the nineties, but that's not saying much when you consider his other major highlights were Demolition Man, Judge Dread & The Specialist.
I'd like to end by saying that I have seen this movie perfectly described as Stallone "going through the motions" and I think that this description says it all.
