Properly named the "Crippler," Chris Benoit fights with eye-blinking quickness with the many weapons that he has at his disposal. Simply stated, the native of Edmonton, Alberta is one of the most technically advanced wrestlers in the game. Benoit is no stranger to the variety of wrestling styles that he has faced around the world on three continents. His superior ring aptitude has won him distinguished Light Heavyweight titles in Japan and Mexico. He dominated the Calgary Stampede promotion, winning the tag and British Commonwealth Mid-Heavyweight titles on various occasions between 1986 and 1989. He has also earned titles in the Japanese IWGP promotion, Germany's CWA promotion, and he is a former ECW tag team champion (along side Dean Malenko). In Japan in particular where he was dubbed Peagasus, Benoit excelled against other light-heavyweight competitors. Success continued to follow Benoit after he made his way to WCW in September 1995. He spent three years building his reputation in the promotion before winning the television title from Booker T on a house show on May 3, 1998. He went on to win the TV, U.S. and World Tag Team Championships. He was also part of successful wrestling factions including the famed Four Horsemen and The revolution. Om 16th January, 2000, finally realized his ultimate dream of becoming a World Champion when he defeated Sid Vicious at Souled Out for the WCW title. Just one day later Benoit was stripped of the title due to backstage problems with management, and his title victory was literally swiped from WCW records. He subsequently left WCW and signed to the WWF soon after. He has had a successful WWF career so far and together with The Radicals the faction in which he was a member when he and three other former WCW stars (Dean Malenko, Perry Saturn and Eddie Guerrero) joined the WWF, he has won WWF gold. He has also won the WWF title on more than one occasion only to have the match continue (and subsequently be defeated) because of a dubious victory. |
