America Gains Two Great Leaders

On the evening of November 4th, 2008, the United States of America
gained two great leaders. No, I'm not referring to Barack Obama and Joe
Biden, I'm referring to Barack Obama and John McCain (although I am
also pleased to see Joe Biden as Vice President). In John McCain's
speech congratulating Barack Obama on winning the presidency, we saw
the return of the old (or real) McCain once again. Mr. McCain displayed
admirable bigness as he asked the crowd not to boo Mr. Obama's victory,
but rather to do as he was going to do. He vowed to help the new
president run the country in any way he could, as the challenges he
would face were challenges for all Americans. This was the sort of
non-partisan, pragmatic, and unifying talk we had once come to expect
from John McCain, a republican who had once managed to win the liberal
hearts of so many young people with his determination to stick to
strong principles. I saw a good man standing on that stage Tuesday
night; one I had thought was no longer with us. I am therefore very
pleased not only at the wondrous victory of Barack Obama, but also at
the return of America's heroic, straight-talking, and inspiring senator
from Arizona. I wish them both well, and the best of luck in the coming
difficult years.
And welcome back Senator McCain.
