Reverend Kubota
Since Vaidehi was imprisoned, Bimbisara
had been unable to get any food,
and the day of his death by starvation
was getting closer and closer. Also,
according to legend, hearing that Bimbisara
worshiped the Holy eagle Peak
from the window, Ajatasatru blocked up
the window and chopped off his
father's feet, rendering him unable to
stand.
One day, Uda, the son of Ajatasatru, was
suffering from a swollen finger.
King Ajatasatru sucked out its pus.
His mother, Vaidehi, having been freed,
happened to see the scene and said, "King
Ajatasatru! Your father sucked pus
from your finger when you were a little
boy, just as you have done." For the
first time, King Ajatasatru was impressed
by his father's love. So he
ordered his men, "Release my father immediatelyl"
The retainers rushed to the prison.
Bimbisara heard the retainers' footsteps
and misunderstood their intent, thinking
that he was about to be executed.
"Oh, my foolish son has finally come to
kill mel" So thinking, he died of a
heart attack.
Ajatasatru, having made his father die,
grew more savage and took
pleasure in doing cruel things, becoming
filled with anger. Moreover,
from then on, tumors began to cover his
whole body, afflicting him.
Because of the pain, he couldn't enjoy
beautiful clothes or joyous music;
on the contrary, they irritated him.
The bad smell of the tumors spread
so far, so terribly, that even his maids
couldn't stand to be close to him.
Suffering from these diseased boils, he
began to reflect on his past conduct.
"This is repayment for murdering my innocent
father and tormenting my
mother, I think. The day that I
fall into Hell cannot be far off."
His mother Vaidehi applied different kinds
of medicine to his body, but
the tumors and boils went from bad to
worse. Ajatasatru told his mother,
"The tumors on my body have been caused
mentally.
This is not a physical matter. So,
even the best doctor can't cure it." One
minister visited him and asked, "My lord!
Do you have something troubling
you? You don't look well. Do you
have physical or mental pain?"
The king answered, "Now I am suffering
both physically and mentally. I've
killed my father the king in spite of
his innocence. I've once been told by a
wise man that anyone who commits the five
deadly sins will fall into Hell and
suffer. No matter how skillful the
doctors are, I can't be cured." And the king
lamented, writhing in pain. Various
ministers visited and consoled him one
after another, but the heart of Ajatasatru
never rested in peace.
Then Jivaka called on him and asked, "My
lord! Are you able to sleep
soundly?" The kind answered, "Jivaka!
Now I am seriously sick. No sort
of excellent doctor, medicine or
charm can ever heal me, who is so sinful
that I murdered an innocent father who
put his faith in the Buddha. Like
a fish stranded on land, like a deer captured
by a trap, I have no pleasure.
Once a sage taught me that if the acts
of your body, the words of your mouth
and the thoughts of your mind are not
pure, you will be sure to go to Hell.
I am the very person that he was talking
about. How could I sleep well?"
Jivaka told him, "Good, goodl My lord,
even if you've committed sin,
you have a deep sorrow of shame now.
Lord Buddha always teaches us
in this way, "There are two kinds of great
teaching (saddharma).
One is renunciation, the other is
intervention. The first way is to have
self-discipline and refrain from sinful
acts, the second is to keep others off
the path of sin. Also, renunciation
is to have a sense of shame (in one's self)
and intervention is to bring to others
a sense of shame. If you don't have
a sense of shame, you are not a
human anymore but a beast. It is shame
that makes you respect your parents and
masters."
"My lord! Lord Shakya once told us,
"There are two kinds of wise men. The
former is one who doesn't commit any evil
acts, the other is one who, even
if he does commit a sinful act, has repentance.
Also, there are two types of
fools.; One commits a sin the other hides
the sin which he has committed.
Even if you have committed a sin, if you
have repentance from the bottom of
your heart and never repeat the sin, your
sin will dissolve and you can be
pure."
"Good, my lord! It was very wonderful
of you to believe in the law of cause and
effect, of karma and recompense.
My lord! You don't have to worry at all. If
there is a person who hides his sin and
doesn't have shame, who doesn't see
cause and effect, nor karma and recompense,
and doesn't make friends with
good people, then such a person is called
"icchantika", one who cannot attain enlightenment. My lord!
You are not an "icchantika". How can you not be
saved?"
"Prince Siddhartha, a son of King Suddhodana
of the Kapila castle, attained enlightenment without any masters.
An he has deep compassion towards all
human beings, as if they were his only
son, Rahula. Now he is preaching to
his many disciples in the Sala Grove outside
of Kusinagara. My lord!
Shakyamuni had great compassion both toward
his enemies and his parents.
Beyond the attachments of love and hatred,
he is trying to save as many
people as possible. Let's visit
the Buddha in Sala Grove and by all means
let's sincerely listen to his teaching.
But Ajatasatru answered, "Jivaka! I really
understand how merciful and
precious the heart of Shakyamuni is.
But I'm already a man of deadly sin.
My body is surrounded by my sinful karma,
it stinks with filth and is going
to fall into Hell. Even if I go
to the Tathagata, he probably won't even talk
to me, because I am such a sinful man.
Please don't try to persuade me
anymore." So saying, he writhed in pain.
Then, they heard a great voice
speaking in the air.
"The supreme teaching of the Buddha is
about to disappear now. The deep
river of the Dharma is about to dry up.
The light of the great teaching is
about to go out. The sun of the
Buddha is about to set behind the mountain
of nirvana. Great King! If
the Buddha passes away, nobody can cure your
serious sickness! Great King! You
already have made karmic causes to fall
into the Avici Hell! I know!
The king can never be freed from these karmic
causes! I just hope you, King, will
go to see the Buddha immediately!
There is no one who can save you except
Shakyamuni Buddha! I'm advising
you because I have pity on youl"
Hearing this, Ajatasatru trembled with
fear.
"Who are you? Only your voice can
be heard."

Where the Buddha converted Sariputra and Maudgalyayana
"King Ajatasatru possessed a very ferocious elephant.
Devadatta, hearing that the
Buddha was coming to Rajgir, arranged to have the
elephant escape. As the Buddha
came toward the city, Devadatta went to the palace
terrace to see the Buddha killed,
but when the elephant came rushing at the Buddha,
the Enlightened One tamed the
elephant with a few words, and the ferocious beast
knelt at this feet."
