departed as a 3rd Class Radioman. The days on the Bluegill were some of the best I have

peace. Thanks for the great web site. Michael A. Axiak

called out to the XO, LCDR Charlie Brown who was standing near the scopes. The last thing

His name is William Speer (sp?). He was on five patrols in the Pacific and has a lot of
information on the vessel. His wife is trying to get it all together for me to go over.
I've read books on the Harder, Wahoo, Tang and a couple of the others and was wondering if
there was a book written about the Bluegill's WWII experiences. Oh well, you have a very
nice site and I'm happy I visited. Oh yeah, I was in the avy from 1957 to 1963. Most of my

Originally qualified on Quillback SS424. Went to nuc school and qualified as RO. Infinite
wisdom of NAVY dispatchers sent me to a great tour of duty at Kodiak Alaska for a year.
All the billets were full they said. Transferred to Bluegill and requalif ed for belowdeck
watch. Went to Tonkin/Westpac 1966-1968 as senior and only ET on board. We were in
Zambawango Phillipines when Bucher was nabbed. Still mad for not being sent to save them.
Stood sonar, radar, ECM watches. Rack was in FTR; slept curled p to MK14. Jack Clay was
Exec. Hard to remember all those smiling faces, but we we're a close and tight ship.
Remember the day we almost lost her when someone left after trim tank valve in wrong
position. They say we blew everything that day including t e mess cook. Scared me alot. I
crawled from After Battery to Control at nearly a 45 dg angle on the floor. TV came loose
from foward bulkhead and hit the after bulkhead without hitting the deck. Remember helping
the watch auxilliary man with the hammer valves. Got out of Navy after 6 years. Thanks for
bringing back old memories. Navy was the best thing that ever happened to me. Take her
down!!

I also dove on her in Hawaii before she was taken out and sunk good. Have some pictures if

I can recall many moments of rivalry and comradship with Bluegill and Bream crewmembers. I
also recall one time in 1961 when your boat was ventilating after fumigation and we
watched your topside watch shut the fwd room hatch and open the after room hatch (in that
order) with no-one below decks! He made it to just aft of the sail prior o high vacuum
engine shutdown. If I recall it took about four hours to get the boat opened up.

My father rode subs for 30 years . I found a large photo of a ww2 type submarine underway
, the number on the sail was 242 and was looking to see if it was one of the ships he had
served on . Too bad it was not . nice site

I am the son of (Andy) Andrews,Clarence W. EN1 SS who was stationed aboard the Bluegill in
the early sixties at Pearl. My father is still alive and living in San Sntonio, Tx. I
spent the Christmas party aboard in the foward torpedo room and watched Snow W ite and the
Seven Dwarfs while laying on a torpedo. I had just turned 12 at the time. My father can be
reached if you would send me some E-Mail I would send the details and try and hook you up
with him.

nice web page. I am sort of wondering why the USS Bluegill was raised from her present
position and taken out to deeper water to be scuttled again. Seems like an expensive
operation.

Nice to see the Bluegill again. Spent a short time on her between the Razorback and shore
duty in 1969. I also served on the "Raid'n" Raton.

I'VE BEEN SURFING THROUGH SUB PAGES FOR A FEW WEEKS NOW AND THERE ARE A LOT OF GOOD
SIGHTS. THEY BRING BACK A LOT OF GOOD MEMORIES. I'M BEGINNING TO WONDER IF THERE WERE ANY
BAD TIMES. I SERVED ON THE USS HALFBEAK (SS352) FROM 66-69 AND ON THE USS BLENN (SS324)
FROM EARLY 69 TIL SHE WAS DECOMMISSIONED.

It's been a long time! The Bluegill was my first boat. I reported to her when she was in
San Diego, tied along side the Sperry. I think it was in 1965 but I really can't be sure.
Doc was there, Fifield, Koivu, and my older BROTHER came aboard just be ore WPac. I had to
have my tonsils removed, so, I missed WPac and was flown to Yokuska and was transfered to
the Archerfish. Does anyone remember the Saki House on my birthday? Nice shore patrol
escort back to the boat.

I'm doing a report for school on subs. I have been facinated with them since I was a
little kid. I've got to make a decision on what i going to do in two years when i get out
of high school. I hope to join the navy and be on a submarine if i can. Your age is great
and I hope i can try to use some of the info in my report. Good luck on finding your
pictures!

I went diving on the Bluegill in 1981 and often wondered what the story behind her was.
Recently I learned a little about her and was happy to see your site while
"surfing". Thanks.

My daughter came in as I was writing my first comments and I showed her the picture of the
Bluegill tied up to the Sperry. I then realized that on the wall across the room was my
framed submarine memoribilia, including a Bluegill ship's patch which I had er look at.
Here's some trivia for someone who remembers: the motto on the bottom of the ship's patch
reads-- "Nuika Pilikia Oka Moana." What is the translation of this ship's motto?

I served aboard the Bluegill from July 1964 to December 1964, leaving just before her
WestPac cruise-- I helped get her ready. As a seaman, EM designate, I was well acquainted
with both forward and after batteries being responsible for battery testing, w tering,
etc. Shortly after I first came aboard, my first sea duty of any kind, I was topside when
someone who'd just gotten qualified was being grabbed to be thrown overboard-- a helpful
crewmember whispered to me to go over and help out. Unsuspecting e naively joined the gang
just in time to get the qualee thrown overboard; immediately thereafter, I followed. Only
after climbing back aboard was I informed that only qualified submariners were allowed to
participate in such a procedure. When I depar ed the Bluegill in Dec. of 1964 I had paid
my dues well. I was a Nuc designate and after my Nuc training made nine patrols, and a
refit/refueling at Bremerton, aboard the John Adams, SSBN 620. I was discharged in 2/72 as
an EM1(SS).

I worked on this boat on several occasions while stationed at Subbase #128 (1957-1959).
Specifically, main induction electrodes and attempts to develop an anti-collision light
that wouldn't flood at operating depths. Like you, I believe I have many Pacifi boat
pictures...however, I haven't seen them in years. If interested, I could try to dig them
up.

I enjoyed your information on the Bluegill. I served on board in 1959 and 60. I had often
wondered what happen to her. I have some slides I took of her and a photo taken by a
professional photographer when we went to Australia. I collect submarine items a d would
like to contact the photographer who took the underwater shots of the Bluegill and see if
I could get a print from him to frame for my collection. I have a bronze plaque and two
different lighters and patches from the Bluegill. Again thanks for th narative and
pictures of the Bluegill.

Nice to find a website for the boat. I served in Bluegill from Nov 1967 to her
decommissioning in 1969. Capt. D.W. West was her last skipper. I qualified on Bluegill on
31 July 1968 and I have contacted some of her last crewmembers living in and around Sa
Diego. I was a MM2 working in Engines Aft, mostly. I have very fond memories of the
Bluegill and am proud to have made her my first boat. Frank W. Raymond, Jr. MM2(SS)

Bluegill was the very first boat I went on. When I was in A School in 1955, my cousin, Jim
From MM2(SS) was stationed on board Bluegill. He invited me aboard to tour the boat to see
if I would like to volunteer for sub. duty. Needless to say, I served with pride for 20
years aboard 6 submarines during that time period.
