The Dragon and the Ring 1
By Maeglin Yedi
He could feel it, sense it, calling out to him. He was close. So close. The darkness surrounding him didn’t stop him from knowing exactly where the Ring was. He didn’t need his eyes to feel its power nearby.
He made his way through the trees silently, and listened carefully for any signs of someone watching him or perhaps trailing him. But he was alone in the darkness of the forest, slowly approaching the One Ring and its Bearer.
Aragorn looked up and frowned. The Hobbits were eating quietly and the campfire provided them all some warmth and comfort in the cold night. Aragorn looked at Bill, noticing that the pony had stopped grazing the grass beneath his feet and was looking into the darkness of the forest surrounding them.
The Ranger listened carefully but couldn’t hear a thing. The night was as silent as it was dark. But Bill still stared into the forest and that worried Aragorn. He trusted his pony enough to know when something was wrong. When perhaps someone was approaching them.
He got up to his feet and the Hobbits looked at him surprised.
“Stay here and don’t make a noise.” he whispered to the Halflings and drew his sword. He made his way into the forest and looked at Bill one last time. The pony was standing completely frozen, his eyes opened wide with fear as he stared at a certain point between the trees.
Aragorn narrowed his eyes and concentrated on his surroundings, his sword ready to attack or defend. He couldn’t hear anything and that was strange. Even though a forest isn’t a noisy place at night, one could normally hear some night creatures making their way through it when looking for food. But it was completely silent. And that worried Aragorn a lot.
Suddenly he saw something move. Someone perhaps. He stopped walking and leaned behind a tree, trying to hide from whatever was making its way through the trees.
It was a tall figure, dressed in a black cloak that covered his whole form and almost reached the forest floor. The hood of the cloak covered the creature's head and threw a shadow onto its face. Aragorn was puzzled. This wasn’t a Ringwraith. But he had no idea who the strange figure could be. Probably not an ally, as a friend would not sneak around their camp in a forest at night.
He held his sword tight and just as the figure was about to pass the tree he was hiding behind he stepped out and pointed the tip of his sword at the throat of the figure.
“Vedui’ Taur ‘ohtar. Uuma dela.” * the figure spoke in a soft but low voice as he stopped in front of Aragorn. Even though he lifted his head up the Ranger still couldn’t see his face.
Aragorn felt confused. This stranger had spoken in the Elven language to him. Surely this dark man wasn´t an Elf. What would an Elf be doing here in the middle of the night?
“As long as I do not know whom it is that is approaching my camp I do worry.” he told the figure and he heard a soft chuckle from the man.
“Amin naa lle nai.” ** the man said in his soft voice and to emphasize his words he bowed his head slightly and spread his arms to show he was not holding any weapons.
“I will not command you until I know your identity.” Aragorn told him and the man reached for the hood of his cloak. He removed it slowly and Aragorn felt shocked.
It was an Elf. But unlike any Elf he had ever seen before. Long straight black hair that hung loosely around his face and touched his back just beneath his shoulder blades. A sharp angled face with pale skin and thin lips.
“My name is Beliar. I hope that I can join you on your way to Imladris.” Beliar said and Aragorn frowned.
“How is it that you know our destination and why do you wish to accompany us?” he asked while he kept his sword pointed at the Elf in front of him.
“Your destination is no secret to me, just as I know what your company carries.” Beliar answered him and smiled slightly, as if he was satisfied by the idea of letting Aragorn know how much knowledge he had of him.
Aragorn felt confused again. Who was this Elf and how could he know about the Ring, for that was without any doubt the secret he was talking about. And obviously it wasn’t a secret to him.
“What are your plans for the secret we carry?” he asked and Beliar grinned.
“The same as your plans, Ranger. Take this secret to Imladris and let the wise Lord Elrond decide over its faith. Although I already have a pretty good idea of what his decision will be.” he said and Aragorn raised an eyebrow.
“And what would his decision be, do you think?” he asked, curious about this Elf’s ideas what the future should hold for the Ring.
“Cast it into the fires of Mount Doom.” he whispered and stared at Aragorn with narrowed eyes, waiting for a response from the Ranger.
Aragorn kept silent for a moment, thinking about what he was going to say. He agreed with the Elf, though he didn’t know if it would be wise to trust this Elf with his opinion. It was not up to him to decide over the faith of the One Ring.
“I believe we should let Lord Elrond speak about the matter.” he finally said and Beliar smiled politely.
“I believe you are right. And again I offer my services to you and your company. Because it is of great importance to me to destroy this secret and its true master.” Beliar said and looked serious.
So the Elf wanted to destroy the Ring and Sauron? Aragorn pursed his lips for a second and studied the Elf in front of him. Finally he lowered his sword and nodded his head.
“You can accompany us to Imladris. Although I have to warn you that if you should attempt to hurt any of us or try to take the secret from its Bearer I will introduce you to my sword.” Aragorn told the Elf and Beliar grinned.
“Is that a threat, Ranger?” he asked amused.
“No, that is a promise, Elf.” Aragorn told him with a wicked smile.
Beliar smiled back and Aragorn gestured him to start walking again.
“Let us join the rest of my company around the fire and you can explain who you are and why you are here.” the Ranger said and Beliar started walking into the direction of the camp.
“I do not believe this is a tale you would like to hear.” Beliar said to himself and Aragorn didn’t understand the words the Elf in front of him muttered.
“What did you say?” he asked Beliar.
“Nothing, Ranger. Nothing at all.” Beliar said and grinned. It wasn´t time yet for this man to find out about his true identity. He knew his secret would be out when they would arrive at Imladris for Lord Elrond would surely recognize him but he wanted to stay anonymous for a while longer, perhaps winning some trust from the Ranger. Beliar had a feeling that this Ranger was more than he would like people to think he was and the Elf was sure that the man would play an important part in the future of the Ring. And such a man would be valuable as an ally.

* Greetings Ranger. Do not worry.
** I am yours to command.
