I tried out the first time experience of running short races on consecutive days. I've run 10 miles on one day, and then raced a 10K the next, but running a 10K on Saturday and 5K on Sunday was a unique experience. The first race was the Anaheim Hills Firecracker Run, which I would recommend heartily to anyone next year. It was pretty small - about 250 people in the 10K, a bit more in the 5K. It was pretty hilly, well, rolling hills, but a bit tough at the end, finishing on a dirt track. They had nice engraved medals for the top finishers in each age group, of which I got one...Afterwards, all registered runners were treated to a pancake breakfast! A little long drive, but I did make a connection with another running group who we could perhaps link up with sometime for a competitive track meet or something! The second race was the Village Runner 5K. This was a big race. Todd was there, too, but he pulled his gastrocnemius 2 minutes before the start of the race and had to pull out. There were probably 2-3000 runners in this race, but despite its size, this race was not well organized. I was warned that I might not get a T-shirt if I waited until after the race. This is a bad policy to get into. The worst thing was that there was not one water stop the entire race. I understand that 5K is not a super-far distance, BUT for beginning runners, they should at least have the water, and when you find it in 90% of the races, you should have it at all of them. Their race expo sucked, too. They should have had more food-related items, and fewer chiropractors!

A scathing editorial from Laura Chaides (voiced by Barbara Hager) about the proclivity of ugly and white race shirts. How come there aren't any other colors?
