While the Vancouver Canucks were disposing of the Sabres in Buffalo last Friday, defenceman Bryan Allen was having a lovely time in the Albany, N.Y., airport trying to get to Manchester, N.H., for the Manitoba MooseAHL game.
"I was supposed to fly from Buffalo to Newark to Manchester and get in around 12:30 p.m., or something like that," said Allen, who was dispatched to the Moose for two weekend games. "Then they cancelled the flight to Newark because of bad weather and re-routed me to Albany.
"Albany was fine but going into Manchester there was zero visibility for I don't know how many hours. Finally they came around and said they had just enough clearance to land in Manchester. I got in there at 4:30 and the game started at 7:30. I had my pre-game meal in the Albany airport with one of our pro scouts, Shawn Dineen. He bought me lunch."
Allen, who does not require waivers to be assigned to the Moose, has gone down four separate times this season as the Canucks attempt to keep him game sharp. The Moose lost and tied the two games in which he played. Allen, 22, flew back to Vancouver Sunday via Hartford and Chicago.
"Sometimes you wake up in your hotel room and you don't know where you are," he shrugged. "I call my parents and they answer the phone by saying: 'Where are you now?'"
On Monday, it was definitely Vancouver.
