WHISTLER -- The Vancouver Canucks learned Wednesday that their 1998 first-round draft pick, towering defenceman Bryan Allen, will not require surgery. It was feared that Allen might have a tear in the anterior cruciate ligament of his right knee.

Canuck orthopedic surgery Ross Davidson received the positive news after an MRI was done on the 18-year-old prospect Tuesday night. He then told Allen he was free to begin skating here today.

"It was pretty tough sitting around not knowing,'' said a pleased Allen. "It was a big worry. The way the doctors talk to you, they probably give you the worst scenario so if it happens you're prepared for it. I am definitely anxious to get going.''

Allen said he was informed of the MRI result by Canuck surgeon Ross Davidson and medical trainer Mike Burnstein. Once he saw their faces, he knew he was in the clear.

"They were smiling so it looked like it was good news,'' Allen said. "I was pretty happy to see those smiles.''

Canuck head coach Mike Keenan was also buoyed by the report.

"It's great news for Bryan and great news for us,'' Keenan remarked. "I don't know if Bryan will be able to participate at a full level but at least he can go on the ice.''
