| Background on PPL Generating Stations Proposal | ||||
| 10 gas-fired peak units were proposed at the substation in Brownstown (see Oct. 9, 2001 minutes). PPL had been in discussions with Akron and West Earl for the 500gpm of water needed for emissions purposes. PPL had also met with the township to discuss possible contributions to township projects. PPL requested at the 7/3/01 zoning hearing board hearing that the units be recognized as an allowable special exception in the agricultural district. The meeting was lengthy and was continued until August 27th. Various residents voice their concerns at the meetings and John Ford presented petitions signed by residents opposed to the plan. The hearing board approved the special exception at it's September 27th meeting. It was reported in January 2002 that PPL cancelled the plans for the generating stations, citing failing wholesale electric prices and regulatory conditions. A correction to that report indicated that PPL still intends to proceed with the approval process but then intends to sell the development rights to a third party. PPL's Preliminary Plan was approved with conditions at the February 25, 2002 Supervisors' meeting. |
