RESTAURANTS ( my rating)

Colonel Brooks Tavern

901 Monroe St. NE - 202/529-4002

This is a Brookland landmark and deservedly so.

The menu has a mix of standard pub fare and a revolving number of seasonal dishes. A really great restaurant in our neighborhood.

San Antonio Grill

3908 12th St NE - 202/832-6117

I'm glad to see this restaurant open in an area in dire need of dining options.  San Antonio Grill bills itself as a Tex-Mex restaurant but also features some good Cuban and Peruvian options on their menu. Their dishes are well prepared and tasty.  The menu doesn't have very tricky dishes -- it's your basic enchiladas, fajitas or ropa vieja or lomo saltado dishes, but these are all well done. I'm delighted that what they serve is made well and tastes good.  Certainly as good as any other Mexican restaurant in the area (the owners were involved with both Cactus Cantina and Lauriol Plaza).  So try it out for some good Mexican and Cuban dishes.

Murry & Paul's Restaurant
3513 12th St NE
202/529-4078

This is a great "greasy spoon." A great place to go for breakfast. It doesn't look like much from outside, but the inside is pure reality. Good hearty food from the grill. It wins points from me for its multicultural decor (Korean doll calendars + Kwanzaa & Underground Railroad posters + Pictures of the Pope's visit to South Korea). The egg sandwich is the bomb.

DELIVERY / TAKE OUT ( my rating)

PIZZA

Today's Pizza
3928 12th St NE
202/529-2900

Pizza Boli
3524 12th St NE
202/635-2800

CHINESE

New Tong Shing
202/832-8868

3901 12th St (at Quincy)

Hunan Delight
Taylor & Hawaii
202/529-8724
Both of these are your standard Chinese delivery. Nothing to write home about but your predictable Chinese delivery.

JAMAICAN

Tropicana
202/269-2001
3522 12th St

(between Newton & Monroe)

This was formerly "Taste of Jamaica." The place has been an added boon to the neighborhood. You may want to visit before and pick up a delivery menu. But their food is really great. A nice jerk chicken sandwich is my favorite. Their sides are wonderful. And don't forget the ginger beer.

HARDWARE / HOUSEWARES

Brookland Hardware
12th & Monroe NE
202/635-3200

So there is a huge box store not too far up on Rhode Island. But when you don't want to walk the length of a few football fields or deal with surly underpaid employees that don't know where everything is, you can saunter over to Brookland Hardware.
An amazing emporium of hardware and housewares, it's the sort of place where they have a little of everything and you don't know how they could possibly know where it all is. But they do. And they also do equipment rental and have a tidy little garden supply with some plants (in season).

BARBER SHOP

Queenstown Barber Shop
3126 Queens Chapel Rd - 301/927-0358

I have a thing for old barber shops. Maybe its the methodical - almost scientific precision that surrounds it. Maybe its all the chrome. I used to drive all the way to
University Place to an old barbershop. This after a horrible experience at the 12th street barber shop. (I was treated so rudely I swore never to darken their doorway again).

Anyway, when I walked into the Queenstown Barbershop I was really blown away. An efficient haircut in a throwback of a place (football portraits circa 1960 and chrome for days!). Anyway, its next to the Giant on Queens Chapel Rd (just take Michigan North until it turns into Queens Chapel, its in the shopping center with the Giant grocery store.

USED BOOKSTORES

Idle Time Books - 2467 18th St NW - (202) 232-4774
Second Story Books - 2000 P St NW - (202) 659-8884
Capitol Hill Books - 657 C St SE - (202) 544-1621

Well we lost a nice little used bookstore on 12th street a few years ago. Now you have to travel a bit to get to a good one. But the three I've listed above have pretty good inventory and are very helpful. I've listed them in order of distance to Brookland (relative that is).
As for new bookstores, they abound. I recommend the good locals like Kramerbooks, Politics & Prose, and Lambda Rising. Happy Hunting.

PHARMACY

CVS - 12th & Newton - 202/832-2064

Okay, not the best pharmacy in the world. But its the closest so it has to do.
The staff is rarely pleasant but its still convenient to have a pharmacy in the neighborhood.

GROCERIES / PRODUCE

Yes!
Organic Market

3809 12th Street NE at Quincy
202-832-7715 website

Nice market with good produce and a nice selection of items. Great to have a good grocery store in the neighborhood. Also great selection of beer and wine.

For other items you can check out the Safeway or giant GIANT in Brentwood.

Weekly Farmer's Market
Brookland Metro Station
Tuesdays 1-3 - Sundays 1-3

No link but here's the skinny: between June and September, there's a wonderful farmer's market on the grounds of the Brookland Metro station. They're there on Tuesday afternoons and Sunday mornings. It's right across from the Metro and the vendors are a number of farmers from the surrounding area. Tuesday has the better produce, fresh bread for sale and coffee beans. Sunday has produce and honey. Very fresh stuff. I prefer the vendors on Tuesday. The prices can't be beat and again, the produce is first rate.

The Glut Food Co-op
301/779-1978

Okay, this is technically in Mount Rainier, but that's a hop and a skip away from Brookland. Its produce is first rate. Their prices are great. And I like supporting cooperative neighborhood-based ventures over corporate bigstores. If you need meat, then you'll have to go to Giant or Safeway off Rhode Island, but if you want the freshest stuff around in a funky setting and wonderful vibe, than the Glut is your place. Check out their website for store hours and directions.

PET CARE

Hyattsville Animal Hospital - 4567 Rhode Island Avenue - 301/864-2325

I will only recommend services we have enjoyed. Dr. Dubois has close to thirty years experience as a vet.
Very nice guy and a very friendly staff. It's not the closest vet (there is Kindcare on 12th street) but we wouldn't
go anywhere else. Besides, you can stop at the Glut on the way back from there.

Dogs By Day...and night 1724 14th Street NW - (202)986-6301
A great place to board your dogs for a few hours or for an overnight. A very friendly staff.
When we pick our dog up from this place he's usually exhausted from the extended playtime
with all the other dogs. Highly recommend this place and their rates are very reasonable.

PLUMBER

Wench with A Wrench - 410/897-8442

Kelly is a wonderful plumber. Cannot recommend her highly enough.
Also check out the listings of neighbor recommended contractors, plumbers & electricians on the Brookland Yahoo Listserve (check out the main page for a link to that).
