.... a collective of Celtic Artists of divergent media and shared outlook, attempts to address what we see as a gap in the broader understanding of culture. We are pleased to announce the first-ever invitational International Comhaltas Art Exhibition at the Annual Convention in Toronto, Ontario. This is an exhibition of contemporary art that reflects the Celtic tradition. |

Visual artists who work within
a Celtic traditional context face
unique challenges. In spite of the
recent revival of interest in
Celtic culture, this revival has
found expression mostly in the
more social artistic forms of
language, music and dance. Artist
have struggled in isolation to
create art work that is meaningful
within a traditional context, and
have often been left aside in favour
of 'Celtic merchandise' at the
festivals and cultural gatherings.
In spite of the fact that there is
often little recognition, these
artists have worked hard to raise
the standard and quality of their
work.

Raising the standard of craft that is inspired by history or tradition is one of the goals of
An Droichead/The Bridge, as is forging links between the past and present, between artists and the community, between art and craft, and between cultures. This exhibition is a giant step towards fulfilling those goals. We hope that it is just a beginning and will inspire others to honour the fine work of Celtic Craftsmen. The exhibition will include a variety of media including sculpture, stone carving, painting, pottery, metal work, and stained glass.
