Trial, Imprisonment, and Branding of Captain Walker

The Branding: Fashioning the Brand

A span of 48 hours from the passing of judgment until the application of the brand was full of activity. As no one had been thus branded, a branding iron with the "SS" had to be made.

The first blacksmith approached to fashion the brand declined. He felt branding was for animals, not for humans. A second blacksmith agreed to fashion the brand, but refused to allow it to be heated in his forge for the actual branding. The person recorded as fashioning the brand was Pedro Yniestra.

Marshal Dorr apparently had a fire built in the courtroom to heat the brand before it was applied to Walker's right hand.

The brand is applied
