Why Nassau?
Most people think of northerly flights over land on into Canada when they think of the Underground Railroad. And for the most part most buildings that we can visit today are those used in this northerly migration.
Nevertheless, many in the Deep South, especially along the coasts, found going across the water much easier and safer. There were many islands in the Caribbean. And the Bahamas, freed of slavery by decree of Great Britain in 1833, became a goal for many runaway slaves. Nassau, on the island of New Providence, became a popular destination.
