The Eighth Day

Day Eight
27 June 1844

Walker ran up St. Joseph's Bay intending to take the boat across into St. Georges Sound to avoid going around Cape St. Blass. Walker finds the distance too great so he leaves the bay and goes around the cape. (The blue line on the map at the left gives an approximation of the attempted portage.)

A close call. A boat approaches Walker's band. Jonathan orders five of the slaves to hide in the brush and allows two to stand with him. The boat later turns away without coming close to Walker's boat.
