The Wicker Man (1973)

This is a film that on the surface looks like a B movie late-night special that you'll find at 3am when you can't sleep.  Silly songs, naked women, low cost production, over the top acting, etc.  But this film still has a solid foundation for the story and enough mystery and seriousness that it can't be blown off.

The story is of a detective searching for a missing girl on a remote island.  He comes across a society that is precarious and secretive.  He investigates the missing girl and finds that it is a cover-up by the whole of the society.  Further, he finds that these people have a cult-like religion and that they intend to sacrifice the girl.  When the truth comes out, the movie is at its most engaging.  The suspense of the story is what makes this movie a good movie.  It easily could fall flat on it's face with the laughable characters running around naked and in animal masks, but it comes off as just believable enough that it's not ridiculous.  Most of the credit must be given to the believability of Woodward and Lee, who make it real.

On the downside, the production is poor with bad sound, unclear picture, silly angles, and at times off-screen shadows in the background.  The secondary actors are poor and often just standing around non-expressive.  It is a cheesy film that manages to be good despite it's shortcomings.   Therefore it falls on the happy side of average at 5.5/10 and worth at least one viewing.
