CLOSER (2004)

I will begin by stating I went to this because it co-starred Natalie Portman, and that's pretty much it. I knew it was some sort of relationships movie and had heard it was pretty good if not controversial.  I left amazed at what I had seen, and this film sat on my mind for days, and weeks.

First and foremost, this is not a family film, a date movie (not really), or a buddy picture.  This is the film you watch alone, or with someone with whom you are in a strong relationship.  This film is harsh.  The languages, the situations, the reality.  In fact, Closer is about the most REAL film about relationships in the new millennium there could be.  There is no happy go-lucky couples or teenie bopper relationships.  Instead, we are shown adults behaving in carefree manners.  We see men and women who are in relationships that are unstable.  We see them looking outside, always seeking the better life, the more perfect catch.  We see people ignoring what they have.  We see these things without the benefit of a "good guy".  At any given time each of the major characters is the "good" person, and then immediately, they are the bad person in the next scene.  We can't cheer for any given character.

The script is brilliantly written and sounds real.  Contained within is drama, comedy, hate and heart.  But the script is character driven.  There is minimal "action", little set changes, and only 4 characters in the whole of the film (exempting the one stop fillers).  Therefore the actors must be solid in their performances, which require much range and emotion.  Further, they must be very open with themselves.  The four actors do this brilliantly, and are the strength of the film.  Without this solid core, the movie falters.  Couple the acting with the ability of Nichols to set a scene, and the great soundtrack and you've got a great thing in your hands.

The only blemish to this film is the lack of great visuals in cinematography.  That's not to say the scenes are bad, as some are brilliantly staged, there is just a lack of scenery in general, as all the action takes place in 3 or 4 locales.  Other than that, this to me is a flawless film.  Deserving of 10/10.
