Brief Family Background

Our first Bowman ancestor, who emigrated from Ireland, was Richard Bowman. He arrived in Boston in the mid-to-late 1840s. His wife was Catherine Manning and they had the following children:
  • Jeremiah A. Bowman - born in Ireland circa 1837, died in Boston April 19, 1889;
     
  • David Bowman - born in Ireland circa 1841; died in Boston August 27, 1871;
     
  • John J. Bowman - born in Ireland circa 1842; died in Detroit, MI April 2, 1913;
     
  • Richard Bowman - born in Boston circa 1848; died in Boston August 17, 1894;
     
  • William F. Bowman - born in Boston circa 1851; Lived in Wakefield, MA;
     
  • Robert Bowman - born in Boston February 1, 1853; died in Boston March    17, 1906;
     
  • Catharine Bowman - born in Boston October 13, 1856.

According Richard's naturalization papers, he was born December 21, 1814, in Bandon, County Cork, Ireland.  He was naturalized on January 19, 1855. (We believe this is our Richard Bowman, however, the name on the document was spelled "Boaman.")

Catherine Manning Bowman died in Boston on December 27, 1857. On May 20, 1860, Richard Bowman married Mary Collins Grady, who was born circa 1817 in Ireland. According to the marriage certificate, Richard's parents were Jeremiah Bowman and Joanna.

Mary Collins Grady Bowman died in Boston January 20, 1869. Richard Bowman died in Boston on July 21, 1883.
