Barbara McGarvey, a longtime assistant principal at Bowen High School,
died
Saturday, Nov. 11, of thyroid cancer at Christ Hospital and Medical Center
in
Oak Lawn. The Burbank resident was 62. Several of her former colleagues
and students said she was devoted to the school and considered people there
her family. "She always made sure she took some students under her wing
during their four years there," said Alejandra Alvarez, a former principal
of the
school. Marisela Gomez, a former pupil, noted Ms. McGarvey's influence.
Without Ms. McGarvey's support, Gomez said, she would not have gone to
college. "She was always there to help me in any way she could," Gomez
said.
"She would push me to go beyond where I thought I could go. ... It got
to the
point where I would actually call her `Grandma.'" After studying at Chicago
State University, Ms. McGarvey started as a gym teacher at Bowen, 2710
E.
89th St., Chicago. She held that job from 1962 to 1966, when she became
an
assistant principal. Ms. McGarvey remained in that post under six principals,
Alvarez said. There were no immediate survivors, Gomez said. Services have
been held.
