Chicago's South Shore is a wonderful book of photographs taken by Hugh Celander in the 1950s & 1960's, compiled by his son, Charles Celander. Some of the pictures are up on the Chicago's South Shore webpage.
Chicago's
Southeast Side by Rod Sellers & Dominic A. Pacyga has
a picture of the
original Bowen
High School built in 1876 at 93rd & Houston.
According to the book,
James H. Bowen was "The Father of South Chicago ...
he founded
the Calumet & Chicago Canal & Dock Company to develop
the harbor
facilities of the Calumet River." These improvements paved
the way
for industries to locate in the area.
Pics of the
1917 Bowen football team
and 1942 cheerleaders are also in this book.
Other books in this series that south siders might enjoy are Chicago's Historic Pullman District by Frank Beberdick and Chicago's Parks by John Graf (very old pics of Bessemer Park, Trumbull Park & Rainbow Beach Park). There's also one on the South Shore Country Club by William M. Krueger.
Chicago's Southeast Side homepage and Southeast Side Tour has historic information and pictures on the South Chicago, South Deering and Hegewisch areas.
Listen to the Dick Biondi Show 1963 on reelradio.com (the commercials are the best part). They also have Dick Biondi on WCFL 1969 and other Chicago WLS Dj's like Ron Riley, Art Roberts, Ron Brittain, Clark Weber etc.
Webpage for Pied Piper of South Shore - Toys and Tragedy in Chicago by Caryn Lazar Amster with cover art by Mitch Markovitz. Caryn's mom and dad were the owners of Wee Folks Toy Store on 79th Street. Fascinating story along with the common memories of the times we all share. There are many quotes from southsiders. Also available at Amazon.com
