Red Line 1980's Photo Tour
The Red Line began the 1980's with an expansion to Braintree and then an expansion through 1984 to Alewife in the northwestern part of Cambridge. Also during this period the MBTA began to rebuild the "Bluebirds" 01400 series cars. These cars were built in 1963 and were designed for the Dorchester route. Because of their design, the 01400's remained in Ashmont service until they were rebuilt in the early 1980's They were rebuilt with headlights, allowing them to be used on the Braintree line, giving the MBTA more flexibility.

Next was the 01500's and 01600's Silverbirds. These cars built in the early 70's were also rebuilt starting in the mid 1980's and through 1988. After the rebuilds of all Red Line cars, they were painted red and white, ending the Silver and Blue appearances. In the late 1980's the MBTA ordered new 01700 series cars built by UTCD to add to the fleet. In 1994 the 01800's built by Bombardier arrived ending the career of the 01400's.
Through the late 1980's and 1990's the Red Line went to 6 car trains after platforms at certain stations were extended.
A train of "Silverbirds" arrives at the Braintree station on a rainy day in June of 1986. The Silverbirds were built by Pullman Standard for the South Shore line in the late 1960's. By the late 1980's they were all rebuilt and repainted.
