| The Green Line saw several changes in the 1980's The end of the PCC car on the system was one of them. PCC's have ruled the Green Line since the start of the MBTA and they have rolled on the Boston transit routes for a number of years before then. The Arborway Line ceased operation in 1984 due to a "car shortage" when the PCC's were retired. After that the line re opened in segments when the new Type 7 cars were placed into service. However the line never reached all the way back to Arborway, now ending at Heath Street. This eliminated a segment of street running and there is great debate if this service will ever be restarted. The Type 7 car began operation in 1986. These cars turned out to be some of the most reliable ever used by the MBTA. Many more were ordered and they began to knock out the LRV as the main Green Line vehicle. From the late 1980's to the 1990's the LRV was rebuilt in an attempt to get more life out of the trouble prone cars. |
