| The Commuter Rail Network began to surge and grow in the 1980's Included was the opening of the rebuilt south station, new locomotives, new cars, and teh retirement of the F10's. Several routes were expanded and service increased on others. The main groundwork for the restoration of commuter rail on the south shore was also underway. The contract for operations was changed from Boston and Maine to Amtrak, as the MBTA had decided it had enough of B&M labor problems. In the late 1990's passenger trains returned to Plymouth, Kingston, and Bridgwater as well as other south shore towns and communities. New service was also expanded to Worchester, Providence R.I. as well as to other points on the system. Ridership has continued to grow on the commuter rail network. |
