Most of the source for the piece on the EYRE family here is according to an article in the New England Historical & Genealogical Register (NEHGR) (1915) Vol. 69, pp. 248-251, contributed by a Miss Elizabeth FRENCH.

Simon AIRES, of Lavenham, Suffolk, born probably about 1557, died after 1637. He married at Lavenham on 7 February 1582/3 to a Susan VALE, who was buried at Lavenham 21 September 1637.

Children, baptized at Lavenham:

1. Susan AIRES, bapt. 18 October 1585; buried Lavenham 20 June 1589.

2. Simon AIRES or EYRE ["1588 Symond son of Symon Aires baptized 21 June"] (See more on this Simon below)

3. Anna AIRES, bapt. 23 April 1591.

4. John AIRES, bapt. 5 January 1593/4; perhaps the man who married at Lavenham, 13 November 1627 to Dorothy HUSKE, and had children who are recorded there.

5. Anthony AIRES, baptized 24 October 1596; buried at Lavenham 2 March 1615/16.

Simon AIRES or EYRE, mentioned above who was baptized at Lavenham 21 June 1588, of Lavenham and later of Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, and then of Watertown, Massachusetts, was a surgeon. He died in New England in December 1658. He married firstly, probably about 1616, Dorothy PAYNE who was born about 1598 and died in Boston 11 August 1650, daughter of William and Agnes (ne NVES) of Lavenham.

Dorothy PAYNE was a sister of Elizabeth PAYNE (wife of William HAMMOND), of Phebe PAYNE (wife of John PAGE) and of William PAYNE, all of whom were early settlers in New England. The surname NVES is probably an incorrect spelling of NEVES or NEVE.

At some time after the birth of their first child they moved from Lavenham probably to Bury St Edmunds, where on 13 April 1635 they sold two houses, a stable, two gardens, and an orchard. Two days later, with their then eight children, they sailed for New England in the ship Increase, and settled on their arrival in Massachusetts at Watertown. Savage describes his family here.

Simon EYRE then, about 1651, married secondly Martha WHITTINGHAM ne HUBBARD, she being born in England about 1612, died 13 July 1687, daughter of William HUBBARD [and Judith KNAPP] and widow of John WHITTINGHAM [whom she had married c. 1634-6].

Simon EYRE was freeman 17 April 1637, representative in 1641, selectman in 1636-1643, and town clerk in 1641-1645. He was admitted to the church 17 April 1647, and soon afterwards he removed to Boston. In his will dated 5 July 1658, an abstract of which is given in NEHGR, vol. 9, pp. 39-40, he mentions wife Martha and children Thomas, Dorothy, John, and Maria, and states that the rest of his children have had their portions. The other daughters, therefore, were probably married before this will was made, as we know to be the case with Anna.

Children by first wife:

They lived at Charlestown and Boston, and had issue.

Katherine BRATTLE married secondly in Boston, 13 November 1707, Chief Justice Wait Still WINTHROP (son of John WINTHROP and grandson of Governor John WINTHROP) and died 2 August 1725.

For more on the private prayer meetings for Judge SEWALL's circle, see http://www.english.udel.edu/lemay/franklin/1718.html where it states:

"Since the group met at different members' houses, these members of Judge SEWALL's private prayer group must occasionally have met for their services at Josiah FRANKLIN's home. Benjamin FRANKLIN, like the other FRANKLIN children, must have known them."
