| Caiseal Mumhan meaning, the stone fort of Munster, The Rock of Cashel was built in the 4th century and was the seat of the Munster kings and the famous of all was Brian Boru' who was crowned King of Munster in 977 and became High King of Ireland in 1002. Visited by St. Patrick in the 5th century and by Cromwellian forces in 1647 who besieged the Rock which began the decline as a spiritual center with the Bishop of Cashel eventually moving to Thurles in 1774. | ||||
