St Kevin's Glendalough
Glendalough, "The Glen of the Two Lakes", is a 6th Century monastic site founded by St. Kevin. The structures that remain today in the 'inner' city are from the 8th and 12th centuries. By the upper lake is the remains of Reefert Church, built by St.Kevin and is his final resting place. The earth that lies within the churchyard is soil from Rome that pilgrims brought with them when making their pilgrimage. Seven pilgrimages to Glendalough was considered one to Rome.
Glendalough flourished until it was destroyed in the 16th century by the Normans.
