Founded by the Carthaginians, invaded by the Romans, Visigoths and Muslims who were pushed out by France the area was inhabited by a people called 'Catalans' in which the area eventually became known as 'Catalunya'. Barcelona was the last stronghold that held out against Franco and the Catalans suffered greatly under the Franco dictatorship for doing so. Not until the death of Franco was Barcelona able to thrive and return to it's former self bringing back Catalan customs, food specialties and hospitality.
