About greasing
- in general
Yes, I
know that most of you know things about greasing, but the significance of this
job is so big that I've just had to put these words here. It's the most important
thing in maintaining of all kinds of machines. You should know that oil and
grease are considered to be a "machine elements" by many experts for mechanical
engineering, because the proper work of machines is disabled if there are no greasing.
The thing is, when there are some movable machine parts that
are in contact with each other, two unpleasant things happen: FRICTION and WEARING.
Friction causes increased energy waste, and therefore increased cost of exploitation,
but the wearing is much worse: if there's no greasing, elements will be completely
worn or even get jammed very soon! The purpose of oil and grease is not to completely
prevent machine parts from wearing, because this is impossible, but to lower its
intensity to the reasonable level.
After certain period of time physical and chemical features
of oil and grease get worse, even if it is not in exploitation at all! That's
the cause why the oil must be changed after one year at least, even if the car
was not in use for that time. On the other hand, if your car do more than
5,000 km in one year, oil should be changed immediately after 5,000 is done,
for the same reason (worse features). Oils of today are made to last 10
thousands, 20 thousands and even more km, but our cars are not made today so change
it after 5,000!
You should know which oil you'd apply for your engine.
Needed viscosity level of the oil depends on the features of the engine,
and, on the other hand, on the features of the climate in a certain area. For
example, oil which should be used for 2CV engines in the continental climate is
20 W 40 or 15 W 40. However, you should consult the manual before buying new oil.
If you live in country where black market is very developed
(like my country), remember that you should NEVER by an oil on the black market.
You never know what you get. I know for many cases that engines, which were in
pretty good condition, were blown after few thousand km done with oil bought on
the black market!
