HO Scale Slot Car Track

It was Mother's Day, 2002.  Being my usual thoughtful generous self,  I decided to "out do" the other husbands and get my wife something special.  I came home with a HO scale slot car road race set.

By evening, she was talking to me again!  AND... more importantly... she was even racing!

It then came to my attention that in order to construct a table for the layout it would take more than I had foreseen.  I had to build a garden shed to move stuff out of the garage to make space for the junk from the basement to obtain the real estate to fulfill my dream.  Why are all the best things in life so darn hard to obtain?

So, as the task continues, I will continue to update this page with the latest pictures and excuses.   Enjoy...

Table base in two pieces
Two piece table base construction for mobility.

Table base assembled
The two pieces fit together to make a sturdy table base.

Assembled layout table
Master modeler Al "Goggles" Charest sands the edges of the assembled table.

I knew that when the "racing alter" was completed and the test track re-assembled the racers would show up.  The table was moved to a space created in the basement and then we waited to see what would happen...

The John Deere racing team arrived shorty after with their Pontiac stock car.

3 Life Like HO slot cars
After a female driver showed up in another Pontiac there were 3 racers.

The initial layout testing was ready to begin.

Through the magic of manual labor and much design and re-design the evolution from the previous picture is obvious.  The objective was to fasten each piece of track to it's own "plywood roadbed".  This forces the track to become even for the entire layout and gives an incredibly smooth race.

1/2 inch plywood base for track
All track is supported by 1/2 inch plywood after "cookie-cutter" design.

Screwing track to plywood
The track is screwed into the plywood and each lane has it's own power supply.

Photo-transistors embedded into track
Photo-Transistors will be used to measure lap times with a computer.

Photo-transistor leads
Under track view of leads from photo-transistors to computer.

Temporary light source
Light source above the photo-transistors is broken when a car passes over.

IBM ThinkPad used for lap timing
Computer instantly shows lap times on the screen to 1/1000 of a second.

Another view of light source
Hopefully there will be some updates real soon.
