Teachers' Institute

The Boone County Teachers' institute held its annual session at Burlington August 23-27, Prof. Henry Newton, instructor.

There were sixty-three teachers enrolled, being about twelve more than there are schools in the county.

An important feature of this year's session was the graduating exercises of eight pupils of the county who had completed the common school branches. It was the first exercises of the kind ever held in Boone county, and it is to be hoped that great good may come therefrom, and next year may see the number of graduates doubled.

It is probable that the Institute will be held at Walton next year in joint session with Kenton county. Not much good can come from holding it at the same place year after year; we desire to educate parons and others, not the teachers alone. There are persons who do not know for what purpose an institute is held. One person who had been living in the county seventy years asked a teacher upon his return from the institute how he come out in the examination.

We say, let us have a change occasionally.

In regard to examinations the law is becoming more strict yearly, and the teacher who does not study to improve is fast falling to the rear.

The people of Boone have just cause to congratulate themselves upon having secured such an efficient band of teachers for the present year.
