Note:    Many people have assumed that the sole reason for the patrols was to apprehend escaping slaves. While this may have served as a secondary function of the patrols, their primary purpose was to prevent various forms of marauding and thieving. This does not mean, of course, that they were not interested in apprehending runaway slaves. The patrols had the power to whip offenders. (See, "Broken Bits of Old Kentucky: In a Riverside Neighborhood of Boone County") The word or^d., which appears in these documents, is an abbreviation for "ordered".
