Barta's Snack Bar Changes Hands
By Sophie Barta Loessin

A local landmark for over 40 years, the property occupied by Barta's Snack Bar located in the 100 block of East Post Office, was recently sold.
Edwin and Mary Barta bought the business originally known as J. F. Vacek Confectionery from Julius Vacek in November 1955. Many of Weimar's locals can still remember the unique flavor of the stew and chili that Edwin and Mary used to make, along with Mary's famous hamburgers.
Elders and teenagers alike from the fifties and sixties frequented the snack bar on Saturday to sample a shaved ice fountain drink made with ice cream, strawberry syrup, and crushed pineapples. Barta's was also a traditional gathering place to socialize over a cold beer and good conversation.
Edwin and Mary Barta, both now deceased, along with their five children, spent many hours tending to the store and their customers. Mary was never too busy to socialize with all of the customers whether they were local or first time visitors from out of town. Language was not a barrier to Mary as she could speak fluent German and Czech along with some Spanish.
No one ever left the store a stranger and everyone was welcome to Barta's Snack Bar even if it was just to relax on the bench outside the storefront.
The building was purchased by Kay Little of Houston. She said she plans to restore the store as close to its original look as possible. She plans to operate a retail business, specializing in western-type antiques and collectible decorative pieces.
