Chapter Index
Gerard watched as the second hand ticked slowly around the face of the clock mounted on the wall by the door.
Tick............ tock................tick......................tock.
Every second seemed to dragg on longer then the one preceeding it.  Fourth period always seemed to last forever.
A few seats behind him sat Frank, tapping the side of the table with his pencil and picking at some of the sleep that was still in his eyes.
Trying to take his mind off the clock Gerard looked at the beakers surrounding him, which only reminded him that Mr. Marcus was about to pass back the quiz they took last week.
Mr. Marcus stood up from his desk.  He was an old man with white hair and glasses.  His white lab coat was on the back of his chair and he began passing back the quizzes.
Frank shrugged as a paper with a B- written across the top in black ink was placed infront of him.  Gerard, on the other hand, waited for his doom.
Mr. Marcus put the quiz infront of Gerard.  "Yes!" Gerard said, promply recieving a punch in the nose from Mr. Marcus.
"An F is nothing to celebrate."
"But, it's a higher F then I got last time sir.  See, last time I got five out of twenty, this time I got eight out of twenty."
"Gerard, I was looking over your file.  You need every credit this year to graduate.  If you don't pass this semester with at least a C you will fail this class, and you will not be graduating."
Gerard said nothing, he just rubbed his nose slightly.
"Excelent Job as always Charlotte," Mr. Marcus said as he gave a girl sitting two seats from Gerard her quiz that had a bright green A+ on it.
Gerard looked at Frank who shrugged.  He'd tried to help Gerard study, and needless to say failed.  Either Frank was bad at explaining these things or Gerard was just a plain idiot when it came to chemistry.
Tick......................tock...........................tick.........................tock....................
The bell sounded and Mr. Marcus dismissed the class.  They piled out of the room and down to the cafeteria or the courtyard to eat lunch.
"How the hell am I going to pass this semester?" Gerard said to Frank as he opened his locker.
"I don't know, pray?"
"So how'd Chemistry go?" Ray said as he walked over from his English class that had been let out later then Chemistry had.
"Another F to add to the gallery," Gerard said.
"That stinks. Wish I could help, but we already tried that."
Yes, Ray had tried to tutor Gerard too... and failed.  It seemed like a lost cause.
"I wish I hadn't failed Science last year, then I wouldn't have to worry about getting the damn credit this year."
"Like Bob and Ray," Frank said.
"Yeah, they passed last year," Gerard said.
"I'm not taking it this year and it doesn't really matter if Bob fails, since he already got the credit," Ray stated,"Where is Bob anyway?"
"They always let his math class out late," Frank said.
It wasn't long before Bob showed up and they walked out twards the courtyard and sat down on the steps.  Charlotte from Chemistry and her friend Tracy walked down the steps past them.  Charlotte exchanged a smile with Ray who was the only one to look up.  The girls kept walking and sat down in a spot on the grass infront of the steps.
Mikey walked past the two girls a few minutes later and sat down on the steps as well.
"Hey Mike," they said.
"Hi."
"Got your locker open today?" Bob said.
"Oh haha," Mikey said sarcastically.  Freshmen always had a hard time with the lockers.  You had to skip the last number and keep turning the dial like a doorknob, then push the door to the locker in slightly before opening it.  Sudenly a sandwhich hit Frank in the face.  They looked over to see a group of jocks and popular girls sitting at a table and laughing.  Gerard shook his head, wondering why they laughed at everything.
"If they're so 'great' why don't they have anything better to do?" Frank said, pealing bologna off of his face.
"Because they just
think they're so great," Bob said.
It wasn't long before lunch was over and the bell rang signaling that they had five minutes to get back to class.
Gerard headed for his favorite subject.  Art.
They were working on their assignment which was to draw what you thought best represented your soul.
A slightly wilted dark red rose was on Gerard's paper.  He was pondering what to add to it.  "Very nice Gerard," Mrs. Valic said as she walked by.  The door opened and Charlotte walked in with her hair and shirt soaked and some black eyeliner running down her cheeks.
"What happened?  And why are you late?" Mrs. Valic said.
Charlotte gave her a note and took her seat across from Gerard.
"So what happened to you?" Gerard said.
"They threw their sandwich at
you and their soda at me," She said trying to whipe eyeliner off of her cheek,"How can something so wet and slippery be so sticky at the same time?"
"I don't know, I'm failing chemistry."
"Right."
She took out a sketch pad and started giving a gothic looking fairy sitting on a flower wings.
