is written mainly in British English, taking the The
Concise Oxford Dictionary of Current English as a
reference. But we have pages about other varieties of
English such as American or Canadian. Don't be surprised
if you see a word that you think is wrongly spelled!
Some words are spelled differently in British English
and American English. "Colour", for example, is British
English. In American English it is "color". We try to
make this clear when it is important. As a reference for
American English we use Webster's New World College
Dictionary.

What is English Club?
English
Club is a "web club" for anyone learning or teaching
English as a second or foreign language. It is a site
where learners come to:
learn about the four skills: listening, speaking,
reading and writing
study English grammar,
vocabulary and pronunciation
learn English through
games, quizzes and jokes
find pen pals for
correspondence by email
ask and answer questions in
the ESL Forums
look for information (for example
about English schools or exams)
and do many other
activities, all designed to improve their English
Teachers also use it as a resource for ESL lesson
plans and ESL jobs.

The vast majority of our
visitors and members are learners and teachers of
English from almost every country in the world. Many
language schools and universities around the world link
to English Club for its solid content. English Club is
specially designed for the learning of English as a
second language, so most of our student visitors are

Who started and/or owns English Club?
English
Club was founded and is owned by Josef Essberger, a
British-born native-speaker who has taught English in
Europe and Asia since 1990. He founded English Club for
ESL learners and teachers in 1997, and the following
year founded TEFL.NET, a site dedicated to English
teachers. With a background in publishing and
photography, Josef is the author of several articles,
short stories and books, including a travel guide
entitled Monopoly London.

means it was one of the earliest sites dedicated to ESL
on the Internet. It started as just a few pages, but
soon expanded to be one of the largest ESL sites with
over 7,000 pages at the beginning of the 21st century.
