Day 16: South Dakota to Home
The truck
- after
[Original journal text ended Sept 2nd. This section written December
2001]
The remaining drive home was fairly uneventful. We stayed on the highway
and just concentrated on covering ground. We arrived back at my house
around 10:00 pm. We had covered just under 10,000 miles in 16 days
(odometer read about 141,500 at trip's end). The only mechanical problems
we had were a dead battery (which led to a broken battery clamp and a shoddy
repair job
), and a worn shock mount (which led to me shearing off and then
replacing the mounting bolts
.)
I would later discover that the continual beating from the rough roads had
damaged the floor of the cab near where it mounted to the frame. This
was not due to a factory problem, but due to the incorrectly installed 3"
body lift that this truck had before I bought it. I was able to weld
that back together and I am still driving this truck every day. It
now has over 165,000 miles on it.
Sean went to sleep on my couch immediately. He left early the next
morning to drive to the beach, if I remember correctly. He's an animal.
I called my girlfriend (soon to be fiance, and later wife) and we went out
to eat at IHOP. I slept well.
