Day 14: Dawson Creek to Kevin, Montana
[Original journal text ended Sept 2nd. This section written December
2001]
This is one of the most uneventful passages of the journey. We see
a lot of Canada, mostly flat and inhabited- much of it is industrial. We
don't take a single picture today.
We stop to eat as we approach the U.S. border but can't find a suitable restaurant.
I think I end up eating Fig Newtons or something. Sean and I
break some new ground as we discuss life and plans and goals and stuff. Knowing
that we are nearing the end of the trip has us both thoughtful and introspective.
The border crossing back into the U.S. is very fast (similar to crossing
into Alaska.) We hardly even stop the truck and they don't look inside
at all. Just check our i.d. and we are through.
We get tired around midnight and decide to call it a day. Our first
attempt at a secluded spot to park the truck leaves us wandering around a
labyrinth of gravel roads between corn fields. Never sure that a farmhouse
isn't just over the hill, we abandon this exit and drive south to Kevin,
Montana. Kevin is very small and dark and quiet at this hour. We
roll slowly through the streets, then end up on a grassy hilltop behind the
local public school. As soon as we get out of the truck, we are attacked
by swarms of mosquitos. I assume they were mosquitos- actually we never
got a good look at them because we were jumping around slapping ourselves
everywhere. They might have been some sort of blood-sucking alien life
form far more viscous than anything on this planet.
We get ourselves packed into the truck for the night as quickly as possible.
Just before we shut the hatch for protection, I notice a strange light
to the north- almost as if the sun is rising over a mountain range there.
I soon realize that the shapes are changing and it is not a mountain
range at all. It is the northern lights. Lower in the horizon
and more slowly changing than I expected. But it was the real thing.
