A champion long distance swimmer called Florence Chadwick wanted to swim 26 miles from Catalina Island to the coast of California in 1952. The water was cold and shark-infested. She swam for 15 hours but in the end she gave up and climbed aboard her escort boat. She was only half a mile from the California shore.

Two months later she tried again. This time she succeeded easily and beat the men's record for the swim. A reporter asked why she was able to succeed the second time.

"The first time clouds covered the coast of California and I could not see my goal. I lost all sense of progress. The second time I could see the coast clearly and could see I was getting nearer. When you can see your goal and your progress clearly you don't give up so easily."
