"mimicked parrots"

Ustinov, who died at age 82, never made a secret of how he used humor to make a point. An actor who won two Oscars and three Emmys, he was a great practitioner of the pithy remark and the quick comeback.

"Comedy is simply a funny way of being serious," he was fond of saying.

Ustinov never seemed to take himself too seriously, and he delivered many of his witticisms with a wide range of accents and sounds. He demonstrated an ability to mimic at age 2 when he was left with a parrot during his nursemaid's assignations.
"It imitated me and I imitated it," Ustinov said.
He began amusing his parents and their guests with impressions of the parrot and soon added leaders of the day, including Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini. He once told an AP interviewer that he would pretend he was an automobile and the last thing he did at night was reverse into bed.
