Is the skill of language unique of humans? It really depends of how we define it. It is easy to belittle the ability of some apes to pronounce few simple words. Some scientists say the teaching sign language is a fairer test, since an ape's voicebox is much different from our ones. Chimps can use over 130 signs to make simple sentences and even invent words by them (such as signing 'dirty' together 'good' to mean 'toilet'). Yet critics claim they merely responding to their trainers' prompts, rather than demonstrate real language skills. |
