as a staple of food. In Asia, 25 to 80% of daily calory

intake is rice. To keep up about the needs of a fast

growing population, the International Rice Institute

constantly improve and tests new varieties of rice

plants. With higher yields and a reduced growing time,

they can harvest two or three times a year. Even though

rice production has double in 25 years, continued

development of the rice plant is needing to respond

to the constantly challenge of population increases.
