Body language is a very useful when traveling abroad, but it can lead also to misunderstandings. Southern Indian shake their heads from side to side to mean 'yes'. The Chinese gesture for 'come here' looks to many European rather like 'go away'. In both Amsterdam and Jakarta men often seen holding hands, but the Dutches and Indonesians interpret this quite Different. At least a smile ought to be ambiguous. Yet Westerners are often surprised and even shocking to see Japanese people smiling at funeral. |
