Between the early 1600s and 1853, Japan were effectively closed to foreingers, except for trading with the dutch and Chinese in Nagasaki. During this time, in 1844, 45 and 46 the British and French sent warship to try to force the Japan- ese to start trading relation. The Japanese began to guard the coastline. Finally the Americans forced Japan to open for trading. This is ironicall because now United States is complaining that Japan is too agressive as a trading partner. |
