Chess 1. Set up the pieces on the board. 2. The king can move only one square at a time but in any direction. 3. The queen is powerful because she can move straight up and down the board or diagonally. 4. The bishop moves diagonally up or down the board. 5. The rook moves straight up or down the board. 6. The knight moves two squares up or down then one across, or one square up or down then two across and can jump over other pieces. 7. Pawns can move one square at a time forward but to start, they can move two squares and they take other pieces on the diagonal. Shogi 1. Shogi is in many ways very similar to chess. 2. As in chess, the object of the game is to capture your opponent's king. 3. The king can move one square at a time in any direction. 4. The gold can move one square straight or diagonally forward, sideways, or straight back. 5. The silver can move one square straight or diagonally forward or diagonally back. 6. The kei moves rather like the knight in chess: one square sideways and two squares forward. 7. The kyo moves straight up the board. 8. The kaku moves diagonally up or down the board. 9. The hisha moves like the rook straight up and down the board. 10. The fu move one step at a time up the board but when they enter enemy territory, they can be turned over and become more powerful. |
