Editor's Take

My first contact with Murali Coryell came on 11/30/99, warming up for G.Thorogood and the Destroyers, on a cold night at the Landmark Theatre in Syracuse, NY. Murali's band consisted of his vocals and guitar, Bill Foster on Bass and Rod Gross on Drums. Murali plays some excellent guitar licks complemented by a voice meant to sing the Blues. If you like straight forward Blues, I encourage you to see and listen to Murali Coryell's work. Special thanks to Billy Blough, Destroyer Bassist, for contributing this photo of Murali at the Concord, New Hampshire show - the night after the show in Syracuse.

I had the good fortune of meeting Murali, Bill and Rod following their performance. They were gracious enough to sign my CD that I just had to purchase following the performance. I have included excerpts from a review of "2120" published in the January 2000 edition of Blues Connection, the best source for Blues news in my area of the world.

Bill Foster - Bass

Rod Gross - Drums

Not only can this man play the inside out of funk, but he also sings like he invented it. "2120" is Murali's latest recording and a pretty serious attempt to market the man's guitar playing. There's nothing pretentious here, just a great guitarist/singer playing material by the century's finest blues/soul & funk writers. The combo accompanying Murali have been working in concert during this recent refocusing on straight-ahead Blues. This is very forceful; personality driven music. The selections include Jimmy Reed's "Bright Lights, Big City" and Marvin Gayes "Sexual Healing". Murali's live shows are experiences and moments of pleasure.
