This month, as we say good-bye and good luck to our Grade 6 students, and also to a number of the teaching staff of Blythwood, it seems appropriate to pause and look back for a moment at some of the school's history and traditions. At the time that the school was built the name Blythwood was chosen instead of the first choice, Lawrence Park. The principal, the late A.C, Hunter, Investigated the history of the name and found that Blythwood was the name of the English estate belonging to Lord Blyth. The Blyth family crest consisted of a stag's head with a Latin motto on a scroll beneath it, It seemed fitting that this crest be used by the school. |
The colours used in the Blyth crest, dark green, apple green and gold, were chosen as the school's colours. A school pin was designed in these colours bearing the crest with the motto. Although the existence of these pins is not known to present pupils of Blythwood, for many years pins were bought and proudly worn by students and teachers. The Latin motto is just two words -- "Spero meliora" -- , which means to look forward to better things. We, in the Blythwood Parent-School Association echo These words as a farewell to the pupils and teachers who are leaving us. We send them all our very best wishes for the future as they move on to the "greater things" awaiting them in their education or their professional careers. |
