When most people think about fairies, they usually think of two inch tall pixies like the famous Tinkerbell who first
appeared in the well known story of "Peter Pan." These fairies usually wear clothing made out of soft leaves with holes
cut in the back for their delicate wings. They have soft musical voices and they love to dance and sing in the moonlight.
Unkind people have been known to say that this is about all that pixies are really good for since their teeny tiny bodies
only have teeny tiny brains. The pixies of course, do not agree. Fairies actually come in all shapes and sizes. Gnomes have big noses and round bellies while elves are slim with pointed ears. Dwarves have bushy beards with shaggy eyebrows while tree sprites have green skin and hair the color of dark leaves. Brownies have wrinkled faces and tall skinny legs while leprechauns have neatly trimmed beards and slender bodies. Despite all of these differences, if you were to ask an ordinary boy or girl to describe what a fairy looks like, you would probably get a description of a cute little pixie. This is very annoying to the other fairies because all of the other fairies work just as hard as the pixie...but who gets all the glory? Who gets all the fame? Its the cute little pixie with delicate butterfly like wings. Well, Joan was not a cute little fairy. The only thing that was fairy-like about Joan was her given name, "Twinkle Toes Dance By the Moonlight On a Mid-Summer Nights Dream." Joan did not like to dance. She wasnt very good at using magic and her singing was almost bad enough to make milk turn sour. Joan was also not two inches tall. She was six FEET TALL with long brown hair that hung down to her waist. In fact, if you were to see Joan walk down the street, you probably wouldnt even know that shes a fairy. After all, most fairies dress alike. Pixies wear clothing made of soft green leaves while elves wear clothing of forest green. Brownies wear robes of brown cloth while dwarves and gnomes wear clothing with earthy colors. Leprechauns wear suits of emerald green and genies wear puffy trousers with white shirts, colorful vests, turbans, and pointy toed shoes. |
